However, Excellent product for housing the four Rhode Island Reds we acquired in May. It protects my chickens from the winter cold. My 15-year-old grandson erected it quickly and independently. We put it on 2x4s and attached hardware cloth to the bottom to discourage predators. We also replaced the latches with some that were slightly larger, and we installed a lock to the nesting box’s exterior door, which does not come with one. I decided to add a metal cabinet handle to the pull-out tray because I love this sort of handle.

I only awarded three stars for weather resistance because the wood is a touch soft, but we sprayed a sealant on all the pieces before assembling it. It won’t last forever, but since we’re new to raising hens, I’m content that it will likely last a few years. We did initially keep the chicks inside all day while they were young enough, and you can do the same if necessary, but now that they are larger they must be let out during the day. Their food and water are rather congested.
